A View of St. Pauls

​The fields to the west of St. Paul's were used as a grazing area for sheep, goats and cows for many years. The  old worn fences provide a playground for this boy as he views St. Paul's and the mountains beyond.

Cow Head
Picture
Cow Head is another beautiful town on the Northern Peninsula. The isthmus   shown connects the town to what is referred to as the head. Out on the head are where the fishing stages are located and where cows once grazed. This is painted from the head looking inwards towards the Long Range mountains.

These Purple Lilies are sheltered from the wind behind the piles of driftwood at  Sandy Cove. Located near Broom Point and St. Pauls.

Tickle Point

Picture
Tickle Point is located near St. Pauls on the Great Northern Peninsula of the Island.
This type of fishing "stages or "rooms" are common all over the Island. They are buildings where fishermen store and repair their fishing gear. In the past the fishing rooms were also used for storing salt fish.
I was attracted to this scene by the contrasts in colour, large sky, and the variety in texture and colour of the foreground grasses.

The fish plant of Englee during the 1970's. This plant had long prosperous history which provided a livelihood for generations of fishermen and plant workers . Now that it no longer exist it is a part of our fishing history.

Old Gas pump

This gas pump was always visible on the Northern Peninsula highway near Portland Creek. It always got my attention because it seemed so out of place among the grass and flowers.

Sea Breeze

There nothing as refreshing as standing on a beach with the feel and smell of the ocean air blowing on your face. This girl is getting the full effect of the Sea Breeze as she outstretches her arms while inhaling the salty air.

Green Point

Picture
Green Point is located between Rocky Harbour and Sally's Cove on the Great Northern  Peninsula. Low grassy hills, an abundance of driftwood, and rocks well rounded by the effects of erosion, make this a great place to visit. Some of the most unique geology on the Island is found on Green Point in the background.

I was inspired to paint this by group of preschool children that would walk by my house each morning. They are all attached by a string and under the watch-full eyes of their caretakers.

Old House Rocks

A group off Summer fishing homes called Old House Rocks is located on the Northern Peninsula of the Island near St. Pauls. I was really intrigued by the kelp below the water. To get the right view for this painting I had to wait for low tide and get as far out on the rocks as possible.

Snowball Fight

We all did this as kids. You would spend hours building your snow fort and making lots of snow balls (ammunition). Then the battle would begin. After a few "raids" on each others fort the forts would be completely destroyed and everyone would be declaring themselves the winner.

Partridge Berries

The partridge berry is a berry that is found on nearly all parts of the Island. It is a delicious tart berry that is picked iin the Fall of the year. Picking partridge berries can be a great family outing where everyone gets involved in the picking. At the end of the day you return home with gallons of berries which make a delicious jam for the winter.

Picture
A game often played by kids is Follow the Leader. In the game one child takes the lead and the others have to follow him/her and do whatever they do. In this image they are following the boy, who is probably going somewhere he shouldn't, and the little girl is trying to keep up with her older sister.

Wash Day

Lots of sun and just the right amount of wind presents a perfect day for getting the wash done.

Skipping Rocks

If the water is really calm when you are walking along the beach there is always the temptation to pick up that perfect flat rock and skip it along the surface. These boys are skipping rocks and probably trying to outdo each other by seeing who can skip the rock the most before the rock sinks
